Now the weaters got cold my aux heater has packed up! I am going to try and replace the glow plug as stated in other topics. What I need to know is will it work straight away or will I need to reset the ECU. If so which version of VAG-COM will I need?

depending on the error it may not have locked out e.g open circuit error doesn't need to be reset but flame out errors do- change the glowplug and try.

Genuine Beru glow plug, i even checked on the Beru website! Only possible problem is there are two types. As this was the only one in stock I decided to have a go. Part number 0 100 226 173 We will wait and see!

Mine was a showing an open circuit glow plug fault and when it was replaced the aux heater fired up first time without any need to reset via vag.com

First time it fired up it threw out loads of smoke, but after that first time there has never been any smoke at all and 18 months later it still works - miracles never cease! The only way to tell it is working is the jet noise, the ticking of the metering pump (sometimes) and of course the water temperature gauge reaches normal!!!

Cheers.

Oggy.

Hi - new member as of today.

Read the threads relating to the heater after the usual white smoke problem (and concerned parents embarrasing comments at my kids school). Got the glow plug part number from the posts, bought it on e-bay yesterday, delivered this morning, fitted it - all is well in the world of armchair driving (this is the first auto i've had).

Thanks very much to all the contributors - you saved me loads and i have the satisfaction of feeling that i've seen the local ford dealer off for about

it seems that it can take a few days to settle down again - how long ago did you change it ?

I fitted the plug tyesterday and this morning it didn't smoke as much. I tried resetting the flame out codes before changing the plug but when the heater started up the car disapeared in a cloud of smoke.

It would seem that the new plug is working and the heater is doing it's job, I'll wait and see if the smoke reduces over the next few days.

mine smoked for about three days after cleaning the heater and glowplug. I didn't replace the glowplug, just cleaned up the heavy carbon deposits on it. and Its working ok for the last 8 weeks.
